My brave boy

The last few days have been crazy. When I picked Kyle up from his dad's Monday night his ankles were both swollen, he couldn't walk and he had a weird rash on his legs. The next morning, the swelling had gone down some but I took Kyle in to see his pediatrician thinking it was an allergy of some sort. The doctor thought it may be hives, but ordered a urine and blood test to be sure.

Kyle was such a trooper and barely flinched when they pulled four vials of blood out of him. I think just the fact that he got to see his own blood flowing through a tube made any pain of little consequence. He was fascinated. The nurse was amazed at how brave he was as the little boy right before him screamed bloody murder for about 15 minutes, so he loaded Kyle down with stickers.

Later on that day the swelling started moving to his knees and by 9:00 that night he couldn't even stand and was in a lot of pain, so Jer and I packed him into the car and took him to urgent care in Escondido. Kyle was finally seen at 11:00 and after examining him, the doctor there couldn't figure out what the problem was and because they weren't set up to do blood work, sent us down to the emergency room at the children's hospital in San Diego.

We got to the hospital at 12:30 and signed in. Paul met us there and stayed for awhile. Animosity seemed to melt away in light of the seriousness of having our child so sick. Kyle couldn't bend his knees, so we stretched him out on some chairs and he finally fell asleep at 1:00. Paul had to wake up at 7:00 the next morning so I told him to go home and that I'd call him when I found out what the diagnosis was. The emergency room was especially busy that night as they had a preemie born, so we didn't get a room till 3:00am.

I curled up with Kyle on the little cot they put him in and Jer sat in a chair all night. He ran around getting food, coffee, water and was a regular hero. He managed to sleep for about half an hour before the doctor finally saw us at 6:30. After more blood work (which Kyle was not up for this time), waiting time and nurses taking vitals, Kyle was finally diagnosed with henoch-schonlein purpura or HSP. Thankfully it's a mild illness, but one which symptoms last for a month and is quite painful. There is no known cause and no treatment, just Motrin for the pain. The only real concern is if it affects his kidneys so I have to be on the lookout for blood in his urine and so far he's in the clear.

We got out of the hospital at 7:30 the next morning and boy did the fresh air smell good! It must be rough to have child who needs to be in and out of the hospital frequently and I'm so thankful that it isn't anything more serious.

Please do pray for Kyle though as he's in the throe's of this and it's not easy on him. Yesterday the swelling went into his back and today it's in his arms and feet. He wakes up feeling good, but by the end of the day he's in a lot of pain and barely mobile. I know the Lord will heal him and it'll only last as long as is necessary, but please also pray that it stops quickly and doesn't drag out for weeks.

He's such a trooper though and is still smiling and telling his silly jokes and trying to wrap me even more tightly around his finger. Tonight he asked me if I can marry him when he grows up. Such love, but no baby. Although I'll stick around as long as you let me.

Not for the faint hearted.

If you're about to eat, you don't want to read this, but while I'm telling Kyle stories, here's another...

Today Kyle came upstairs for parent time and started going on and on about a cake he made me, "mom, I made it so yummy just for you! You're going to love it! Are you so happy that I made it for you?" I figured he did a baking project with the other kids and since I'm always up for a piece of cake, I thanked him 100 times and told him how excited I was to eat it.

We went downstairs for dinner and Kyle wanted to show me the "cake" he made. He was beyond delighted when he opened the fridge and pulled out this:

"Mom, it's so good! I took eggs and jello and mixed it up! It's ready! Do you want to eat it?" I was absolutely horrified, but I didn't want to hurt his feelings as he was so excited, so I told him it wasn't ready yet while I tried to figure a way out of it.

He told me he wanted to make one for Jer and before I knew it he set himself up with a bowl, some eggs and a green jello cup from the pantry, all ready to make the runny, gelatinous concoction again. Thankfully Jer stopped him in time and explained to him that you can't eat eggs raw and you can't eat jello cooked, so the combination wasn't the best idea.

He got the point, but with such disappointment in his face said, "sorry mom, you can't eat the cake I made you because the raw eggs will make you sick". Was I ever relieved, till dear Paula pipes in with "your mom can still try it!" You first Paula.

Till the numbers end...

Kyle has this thing where he says "I love you one hundred and eighty-six!" Or, "I love you one thousand, eight and thirty hundred! Mom, does that make sense?"

The other night I was tucking him in for bed and he said "Mommy, I love you two thousand and sixteen!" I said "Well I love you two thousand and seventeen!" Kyle said "Wow, that's alot! Mom, do you love me till the numbers end?" I told him that I do, because the numbers never end, and he said "but because that's how much I love you."

Just another reason why Kyle has me wrapped around his little finger.

Yipee!

I bet 2 whole dollars on the Colts against the Bears with Jer and won! I even spotted him 7 points. A definite improvement from my last football bet. May the good times roll...

I like!

I just listened to Stem's new album, Heavenly Music, all the way through for the first time on my run yesterday, and I have to say....IT ROCKS!

This little girl's story is amazing. So beautiful and faith building.
